A round of Pai Gow Poker begins when all players at the table place their bets before any cards are dealt. Once the bets are placed, the dealer shuffles the deck and deals seven cards face down to each player and to the dealer's position, with any unused cards set aside as a "dead hand." Players then pick up their cards and carefully arrange them into their five-card high hand and two-card low hand, placing them face down in the designated positions on the table.
The dealer then reveals their own hand and arranges it according to a set of predetermined rules known as the "house way," which dictates exactly how the dealer must set their cards in every possible scenario. Once both the player's and dealer's hands are revealed and compared, the outcome of the round is determined - a win, a push, or a loss - and the next round begins. The pace of Pai Gow is notably more relaxed than many other casino games, giving players ample time to think through their hand-setting strategy, socialize with fellow players, and fully enjoy the experience.
THE ROLE OF THE JOKER AND HAND RANKINGS
One of the most distinctive elements of Pai Gow Poker is the inclusion of the Joker, which adds an extra layer of strategy and excitement to every hand. The Joker functions as a semi-wild card, meaning it can be used to complete a straight, a flush, a straight flush, or a royal flush - but if it cannot be used to complete any of those combinations, it automatically defaults to the value of an Ace. Hand rankings in Pai Gow Poker follow the standard poker hierarchy, with a Royal Flush at the top, followed by a Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight, Three of a Kind, Two Pair, One Pair, and High Card at the bottom. One notable exception unique to many versions of Pai Gow Poker is that the hand A-2-3-4-5, known as "the wheel," is ranked as the second-highest straight, just below A-K-Q-J-10. Understanding hand rankings and how to leverage the Joker effectively is a key component of developing a strong Pai Gow strategy, and mastering these elements can significantly improve a player's performance at the table.
STRATEGY AND TIPS FOR WINNING
While Pai Gow Poker involves an element of luck, it is widely regarded as one of the most strategy-driven games in the casino, and players who take the time to learn proper hand-setting techniques will find themselves at a significant advantage. The fundamental principle of a strong Pai Gow strategy is to create the most balanced combination of hands possible - meaning you want both your five-card high hand and your two-card low hand to be as competitive as they can be, rather than loading all of your best cards into one hand and leaving the other weak. For example, if you are dealt two pairs, it is generally advisable to split them between your two hands rather than keeping both pairs in your five-card hand, as this gives you a stronger chance of winning both comparisons against the dealer. When holding three pairs, the strongest pair should typically be placed in the two-card low hand to maximize its impact.
